Marriage Certificate

Every Kenyan wishing to marry abroad has to apply for a Certificate of No Impediment to Marriage from the nearest Kenyan Mission. Marriages conducted without issuance of this Certificate will neither be recognized by the Mission nor the Authorities in Kenya.

Issuance of this certificate involves search by the Registrar of Marriages to establish the civil status of the applicant. For this reason, it takes time and it therefore advisable to apply well before the planned date of marriage, preferably 3 months in advance.

Note: Do not indicate your marital status on the application form as Single. Enter either Spinster, Bachelor, Widowed or Divorced

The Kenya Government neither acknowledges nor endorses same sex marriages.
Please note that Certification can only be done at the Embassy in which case the applicant comes with the original and a copy or before a notary public. The Mission does not accept scanned certified copies or photocopies of certified copies.

The applicant requires the following:

  • A completed application form for certificate of no impediment
  • Certified copy of your passport
  • Certified copy of your birth certificate
  • Certified copy of your fiancée’s passport
  • Fee of USD 70
