AMBASSADOR VISITS BENGO PROVINCE

On 17th March 2020, Ambassador Josphat k. Maikara, MBS undertook a one-day official visit to Bengo Province. The visit in line with the Mission’s mandate of enhancing bilateral relations between Kenya and Angola and was geared at identifying possible areas of cooperation specifically in Bengo Province.

During the visit, the Ambassador was received by H.E. Mara Baptista Quiosa, Governor of Bengo where they held fruitful discussions on an array of issues mainly in the sectors of tourism and agriculture.

Ambassador Maikara informed that Bengo Province has immense potential to develop its tourism sector. It has the necessary resources, in land, beaches and historical sites that can be developed to attract tourists. The Ambassador pointed out that, Kenya being one of the leading and respected tourist destinations in Africa, can be of great benefit to Angola and in particular Bengo Province in areas of capacity building to ensure the right experts and human resource is nurtured and attracting necessary investment.

In agriculture sector, the Province is the main producer of Bananas in Angola both for the domestic and international market. Angola and indeed Bengo has vast last land to turn it into a food basket for the entire continent. The Ambassador reiterated that in the spirit of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement, African countries are being encouraged to produce and invest in and for Africa; Kenya has many agricultural experts that can assist Angola in this sector. 

On the other hand, Governor Mara Quiosa concurred on the need to enhance cooperation, and welcomed the Ambassador’s proposals for capacity building and investment as they fall in line with the Government of Angola’s ambition to diversify its economy. Further discussions are to be held on this front.

In addition, it was agreed that the Governor undertakes a benchmarking visit to Kenya and establish a twinning project with one of the Counties in Kenya. 

The Ambassador toured the Municipality of Ambriz, one of the six municipalities of Bengo of Province and visited the Açude tourism zone which included a fortress, the Slaves House historical site and the Kinfuca beach. In the capital of the Province, Caxito, the Ambassador visited one of the biggest Banana farms owned by the Nova Agrolider Group. 

The Ambassador was accompanied by Mr. Andrew Mujivane and Mr. David Cassanga from the Kenya Embassy in Luanda.
